The more I learn about nutrition and diet the more confused I become.
Have you seen the 60 Minutes special on sugar? They claim sugar is the enemy.
Have you seen Forks Over Knives? They claim saturated fats and processed foods are the enemy.
Have you seen the Bulletproof Diet? He claims everything is the enemy.
They all claim that the Western diseases of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer could be solved purely by removing _______ from your diet. You fill in the blank.
I read blogs, articles and studies on all sides of the issue and I end up feeling overwhelmed. It seems like there are so many opinions and so few truths.
Almost everyone agrees that we should be eating more vegetables. But then you have to ask yourself:
Does it need to be organic?
Does it need to be locally grown?
Almost everyone agrees that we should be eating more fish and shellfish. But then you have to ask yourself:
What about toxins like mercury and PCBs?
What about depleting the oceans?
Almost everyone agrees that we be eating more whole grains. But then you have to ask yourself:
What about gluten intolerance?
How do I make them flavorful without sugar, fat or salt?
Lets not even get into the debates about high fructose corn syrup vs sugar, saturated vs trans fat, processed vs. whole grains and grass-fed vs. grain-fed meats. It is enough to make your head explode.
With all these choices and confusion it is no mystery why people all over the world are struggling to make the right decisions.
I know I struggle to make the right decisions for my family.
I try not to let perfect be the enemy of good enough.
I try to eat real food. Vegetables and Fruits. Rice and Potatoes. Chicken, Beef and Pork.
I try to reduce the amount of sugar, trans fats, and processed grains in my diet.
I try to cook as many meals as possible at home with fresh ingredients.
How about you? How are you dealing with the confusion?
